Thailand is moving towards a full-fledged ageing society in 2025 as the number of citizens aged 60 will increase up to 14.4 million accounting for 20 percent of all aged population and one-fifth of them shall be the elderly with diabetes. International Diabetes Federation has forecasted that in 2040 or within 20 years, Thailand shall have diabetes patients up to 5.3 million and according to health report, 4.8 million of people aged 15 and over are diabetes patients whereas 2 million of whom do not recognized that they have developed diabetes mellitus or yet to be diagnosed.

Dr. Petch Rod-aree Secretary-General of Diabetes Association of Thailand under The Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (DAT) cited that “The first major cause of diabetes death is cardiovascular disease. Thailand has spent up to 47,596 million baht per year for diabetes treatment and it is worrisome that 7.7 million people are in risk of diabetes mellitus or having higher level of glucose in their blood than normal range and these risky group of people shall likely become diabetes patients at the rate of 5 – 10 percent per year which can be prevented”.

“In addition, Type 2 diabetes patients have been continuously increased with a significant cause from insulin resistance where the body is unable to produce ample hormone insulin or unable to efficiently use of insulin, making the high blood sugar level and developing into diabetes mellitus. Leaving the high level of sugar in blood for too long shall impair the pancreas to unable or produce less insulin, needing the patients to get insulin to curtail blood sugar level into normal range”.

“Recently, DAT has placed an importance on helping diabetes patients who need insulin treatment by imparting them with information regarding insulin and prioritized the self-care accuracy for a better of quality of life. Since an inappropriate handling of diabetes or an insufficient treatment resulted in disability and complications such as eye disease, stroke, kidney disease cardiovascular disease and below-knee amputation”

Dr. Petch Rod-aree further stated that Thailand has limited number of medical personnel and cannot educate all cases of diabetes mellitus and Thailand still does not have e-learning media for Type 2 diabetes patients who need to have insulin treatment in order to facilitate the patients and those who have to take care of such patients to learn by themselves. Sometimes, the patients may have incorrect information from social media without references resulting in a misunderstanding on the use of insulin.
